EJH 8th Grade Research Project: Washington D.C
Washington D.C., located on the east coast of the United States, is our nation’s capital. In 1790, President George Washington was empowered to select the site that would serve as the new nation’s federal site. Pierre L’Enfant (a French immigrant) was appointed to create the plans for the new capital. George Washington laid the cornerstone for the “White House” in 1792. The federal government officially moved to Washington D.C. in 1800.
Washington D.C. was known as “the City of Magnificent Intentions” by Charles Dickens. There were many roads that led “nowhere” and buildings that remained unfinished. The potential was there, but unfounded.
Today, Washington D.C. is known as a city of Museums and Monuments. James Smithson left a fortune to his nephew with the provision that “an establishment for the increase and diffusion of knowledge” be created. Congress officially recognized the Smithsonian Institution in 1846.
Washington D.C. is a place for business and pleasure. There are many places to visit and learn about our country’s historical past. You are now ready to get started with your exploration. Have fun and enjoy your “trip!” Click on the task link above to continue.
